The performance of model seaplane hulls having length-to-beam ratios of 8 and 12 was estimated by observing the motions of heave, pitch and roll while towing the model at various angles and at various speeds into a simple seaway. The models were each towed at three different speeds on five different courses. Two different wavelengths and two different model loadings were used. The data were recorded on 16-mm movie film taken from two cameras one showing a front view and the other showing a side view. The results were somewhat inconclusive since all parameters were not varied through a complete range. Results indicate that increasing the length to beam ratio from 8 to 12 for the same planform area results in a slight improvement of the seaworthiness of the seaplane. The tests also indicate that greater magnitudes of pitching, rolling and heaving exist on courses of 120° to 150° than on courses of 90° and 180° relative to wave travel.
