INTRODUCTION : Outlaw Mesa is on the north side of the Dolores River about 10 miles southeast of Gateway, Mesa County, Colorado (fig. 1). It is an oval-shaped area of about 17 square miles. The U. S. Geological survey drilled 702 diamond-drill holes, totaling 94,890 feet, on Outlaw Mesa between January 20 and December 22, 1949. This work was done on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission, primarily to discover carnotite ore.
