The nutritional value of an organism’s diet plays an integral part in the evolution of their feeding strategy. In return, the morphology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract evolves to facilitate either an intake, or retention-maximizing feeding strategy. The microbial diversity harbored within separate compartments of the GI tract shows variation on temporal, spatial, sex-specific, host phylogenetic, interspecific, and intraspecific levels.
