The ventral subiculum serves as the primary output structure of the ventral hippocampus and is comprised of two types of electrophysiologically distinct excitatory neurons called regular- and burst-spiking cells. Regular spiking and burst spiking neurons project to downstream brain regions which includes the nucleus accumbens. The nucleus accumbens is a brain region that controls drug-induced reward seeking and potently regulates dopamine levels in the brain.
