Ligamentous support is critical to constraining motion of the cervical spine. Injuries to the ligamentous structure can allow hypermobility of the spine, which may cause deleterious pressures to be applied to the enveloped neural tissues. These injuries are a common result of head trauma and automobile accidents, particularly those involving whiplash-provoking impacts.
