Abstract

The artist's statement: Home is not a place. Home is a road trip with my best friend. It is a family meal, when you have been away. It is holding hands with you. Home is a sense of composure and contentment. Throughout my young life I have lived in several different countries moving to several different homes along the way. This impacted me as I grew older. I found that I struggle making long and lasting connections with those around me. As a result of these pivotal experiences, I have found difficulty in discovering a stable space to thrive. My work in painting is an approach to construct my own foundation. I create architectural spaces of wake or rest in an attempt to find a feeling of serenity. I use clean colors and crisp lines to create these safe and controlled environments for my mind. The process of meticulously measuring out every inch and angle and managing the arrangement of entrances helps me obtain a sense of control. Though these spaces are open and seem structurally sound, they are impossible to achieve. I have come to realize, while working on this concept that a place for myself is unlike the real world. The space that I am looking for is found in me. Although searching for a clairvoyant space to belong in has not been completely resolved, I have grown to find home in myself.
