Kallie Bauer works for the Colorado Division of Water Resources as a dam safety engineer. When the September 2013 floods hit Northern Colorado, Bauer had only been on the job for five months. In her interview she recounts the challenges that being a new dam safety engineer presented when responding to a large-scale disaster. Bauer also notes the overwhelming presence of the news media throughout the flood event and the constant challenge of dispelling rumors that dams were failing across the state.
